The Infamous School Superintendent Search
Recently, I had a conversation with a few others involved in the education profession. The talk turned to superintendents and how it seems that so many are asked to resign their jobs before their contracts are up.
This usually means school districts forking over hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to pay out the remainder of the contract. It also means thousands of dollars hiring a new superintendents, usually at a higher pay than the last one, and it happens all the time.
It’s incredibly frustrating for teachers to hear this kind of thing. It’s also a source of irritation for parents and taxpayers whose money is needed on school buildings and curriculum supplies. Many superintendents claim long term commitment to the city and school district where they work, then turn around and leave the minute a better opportunity comes their way. While this is of course within their right, it is ridiculous for district money and tax money to be used to pay them for a job they are not doing.
It’s long past time for reform in this area.
