The Public School: A New Definition?
David W. Kirkpatrick over at ednews.org wrote an interesting article entitled What Are “Public” Schools? It is an intriguing article about what kind of schools should be considered public. He makes the point that many schools not necessarily classified as public are still serving the public interest of education.
I would add my own two cents that, with Mr. Kirkpatrick’s definition, home schooling could also be considered public education.Whether others agree with it or not (that’s a whole other post), it serves the public benefit of education everyone in society and that is, after all, what we are striving for.
What do you think? Do you agree that this “new” definition should be embraced? Do you think it’s wise to minimize the separation between public schools and other types of education?
